Course duration: Practical elements are covered over 4 days attendance at our centre 9.30am – 5.30pm. Theory elements are covered by homestudy, typically over 3 to 12 months plus 3 final assessments to be carried out at our centre.
Course description: Swedish body massage is the original massage technique involving a sequence of movements working superficially and deeper into the tissue layers. Movements such as effleurage work over the skin with the palm of the hand producing relaxation, whereas movements like petrissage work deeply. Petrissage movements such as wringing and kneading will help to relieve tension promoting deep relaxation in the tissues and muscles.
The VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Swedish Massage (QCF) is a specialist vocationally related qualification. This qualification will enable learners at a minimum to gain skills, knowledge and understanding required in order to perform Swedish massage treatments for clients. Learners will gain skills and knowledge and the understanding needed to perform professional Swedish massage treatments for clients via employment or self employment in the beauty therapy or complementary therapy industry. This qualification is most suited to learners who wish to advance in their profession.
What will I learn? The Level 3 Certificate in Swedish Massage (QCF) is a course that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in; how to provide the relaxing and stress relieving treatment of body massage. Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge of Health and Safety, client care and communication. You will also develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills learned throughout this qualification, such as anatomy and physiology. The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills in providing body massage treatments to a high level of occupational ability, to enable you to provide your own services for clients.
This qualification will enable students to gain skills; knowledge and understanding required in order to perform Swedish Massage treatments for clients in a safe and effective manner for stress relief, lymphatic drainage and reduced muscle tension. It is suitable for those employed in beauty therapy, health and fitness therapies, and holistic therapies and in association with a wide range of other treatments designed to relieve stress. Swedish massage is one of the most popular types of massage courses in the UK.
National Occupational Standards (NOS): Units in this qualification have been mapped to the relevant NOS (where applicable). This qualification is accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). This qualification is approved and supported by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Authority (HABIA), the standard setting body for hair, beauty, nails and spa qualifications.

What are the course requirements? It is recommended that you have a level of general education comparable to GCSEs. You should have a caring disposition and be committed to fulfilling the in-class and guided home study components of the course. To enrol on this course you must attend an enrolment interview either in person meeting the course tutor, or via telephone/Skype. You must meet the required Guided learning Hours (GLH) by attending our centre and by attending classes in our Virtual Learning Environment, online meetings and reviews with your tutor and assessor via Moodle.
How will I be assessed? This qualification requires the student to provide evidence of competence in the form of case studies or individual treatments to cover range statements, demonstrate sufficient knowledge to be able to explain Swedish Massage and provide it safely, effectively and consistently.
Independent study is an essential part of this course and you will be required to complete both practical and theoretical assignments at home. Assessments will take place during the course and again when all your case studies and Portfolio of Evidence is completed.
Unit assessment methods: Portfolio of Evidence, Practical Demonstrations and Assignments
Case studies – you must carry out and document evidence for at least twenty treatments on a minimum of four clients.
