Regulation

Many Reiki Associations are participating in discussions about the regulation of Reiki public practice.  The minutes of the latest meetings can be seen at the Reiki Regulatory Working Group websiteThe Reiki Regulatory Working Group (RRWG) was set up by representatives of a number of Reiki organisations in collaboration with the Prince of Wales’s Foundation for Integrated Health. The RRWG provides a forum for the exchange of views, concerns, standards and best practice with the intention of “speaking with one voice” in working towards Voluntary Self Regulation of Reiki and creation of the single UK Register of Professional Reiki Practitioners.

So what does Voluntary Self Regulation of Reiki involve and what does it mean for Reiki Practitioners of all schools and lineages?

As set out in the 'Education and Accreditation Discussion Document', there are numerous styles of Reiki, each of which may have the professional standard set to require at least a particular level of attunement/initiation. For some this is Reiki I, for some it is Reiki II, for some it is Master level and for others, it is a gradual process involving many empowerments rather than levels of initiation. Individual professional bodies may continue to set professional practice at a particular level in relation to their style of Reiki but this will not be the function of regulation.

It has been proposed that in order to encompass all 'styles' of Reiki, education requirements are not set at any particular 'level' or 'degree' but on the following:

having been connected to Reiki in-person by a Reiki teacher (one in-person
attunement/initiation is already in the Reiki National Occupational Standards)

a minimum number of hours learning and practice

the ability to comply with the Reiki National Occupational Standards

  a commitment to personal practice

Proposals suggest that a student commits to:

50 hours’ active learning of Reiki of which at least 15 hours will be in person with the teacher who gave the attunement/initiation. The remaining hours may take a variety of forms such as: review classes; email, letter or telephone communication; teacher-led Reiki share; teacher-led internet forum; giving or receiving of treatments with a teacher; self reflective journals and case histories

maintaining an on-going professional relationship with a Reiki teacher throughout the training period

accessing continued support after completion of practitioner training

complying with all aspects of the National Occupational Standards (Reiki NOS)

gaining knowledge and understanding of the Code of Ethics and Practice for Reiki practitioners in the UK

at least 6 months Reiki experience following attunement/initiation

the completion of 100 in-person Reiki sessions after your first initiation/attunement to Reiki

experience in receiving some form of monetary payment for 20 of the required sessions. This is felt to be important, even for those working in a voluntary capacity, since there is a common difficulty within the healing professions of valuing individual time and selfworth

  personal practice which would include:

1. Self treatment
2. Receiving Reiki
3. Seeking support from fellow practitioners
4. Acknowledging the importance of self-reflection taking 'time out' if required for own health and seeking help if appropriate
5. Having contact with a mentor when required.
6. Reflection on practice
7. Continuing to be open to new learning on a personal and professional level
8. Engaging in continuing professional Development

The ‘in-person’ attunement/initiation is designed to prevent someone who has received all of their Reiki training at a distance or on the internet from registration. If you have received Reiki training at a distance or on the internet and you would like to retrain in order to meet the requirements of Voluntary Self Regulation of Reiki and register, Chrysalis Therapy Training will reduce your investment by 25%. To qualify for this special offer you must have received all your Reiki training at a distance or on the internet and provide a copy of your certificate or certificates.

National Occupational Standards (Reiki NOS)

These are already nationally approved and documents containing the Reiki NOS may be found at
www.reikiregulation.org.uk and
www.skillsforhealth.org.uk.

They consist of 12 competencies, seven are mandatory, five are optional. Some skills are relevant to more than one competence and as each unit is designed to stand alone, there is repetition.

Mandatory Competencies

CHR 1 Evaluate and process requests for Reiki
CHR 2 Assess the client
CHR 3 Plan Reiki with the client
CHR 4 Provide Reiki
CHR 5 Evaluate the effectiveness of Reiki
HSC 32 Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security in the working environment
HSC 234 Ensure your own actions support the equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities of individuals

Optional Competencies

One further unit is required for registration to be chosen from the five other Reiki NOS units that have been accepted as optional competencies. Those not chosen for initial registration could be used as part of continuing professional development.

CHR6 Enable the client to practise and use self-treatment
CHR7 Evaluate the effectiveness and use of self treatment

These two units are designed for practitioners who are also teachers and may initiate/attune the client to self treat between consultations. The term “self-care” in Reiki NOS refers to lifestyle choices.

AHP 10.1 Reflect on and evaluate your own values, priorities, interests and effectiveness
AHP 10.2 Synthesise new knowledge into the development of your own practice
PA 7.2 Plan, co-ordinate, evaluate and review professional activities

Our VTCT Level 3 Diploma for Reiki Practitioners course is designed to cover these core competencies enabling students who obtain this qualification to register.
